Madagaskar Travel · Means of travel · Road traffic

The Madagascan road network is not at all up to the standards of European infrastructure. We are travelling to a developing country – and one should always be prepared for this. This shouldn't be a problem for experienced globetrotters, but less experienced travellers need to be prepared..
Most vehicles would not pass European safety regulations. The streets do not enjoy lighting and drainage facilities of European standards either. . However, things are changing and there are already many kilometres of improved and very good main roads., . But you'll be sorry if you drive on B roads. This means one has to travel more carefully and more slowly. This has at least one advantage: one sees more of the country and people.
This is a reason why you should hire a taxi or a car only if a native driver is available. The native drivers know all routes, including almost all their faults. This has the advantage of ensuring that the traveller arrives at his destination in an as pleasant and as comfortable manner as possible.
The official rents are relatively high and amount to approximately 100 EUR per day plus fuel, drivers included. Mostly four-wheel drive-jeeps are offered, although this kind of car is really only necessary during the rainy season. We organise cars for individual travellers who have booked their travel with us. Cars are standard models, with drivers, in good working order and at sensible prices.
This service must be booked early. It is understandable that, usually, good offers are taken up very fast!

Biking tours are also possible on the „Mini-Continent“ of Madagascar.
Bikes can be hired..

Our cycling groups are normally accompanied by a jeep.

Many native taxi drivers operate in vehicles that are unsafe with, e.g.,
doors secured by wires.

Rickschaws are also used to transport people, often tourists, and loads
(not uncommon in developing countries) (). This is a means of livelihood for
many Madagascans.

There is a public transport service from the spa town of Ifaty to the next large town to Tulear.
