Trekking Trails

1st day: journey to Paris

Individual journey from your residence to CDG airport in Paris. It’s possible to start the journey from several airports in Germany flying to Paris. Please ask about it.

2nd day: Arrival at Antananarivo

Flight at 3:15 a.m. from Paris to  Antananarivo (Tana for short), the capital city of Madagascar. Arrival at Antananarivo (Tana), Ivato airport. Arrival at Ivato airport in the afternoon (3:00 p. m.). Check-out and transfer to the Hotel Bellevue or equivalent, bed and breakfast. Welcome and a short discussion of the journey.

3rd day: Antananarivo - Tsimbazaza

We start a sightseeing tour and inspect old colonial buildings in the morning. A wonderful view is on offer from the Rova. Visit to the zoological botanical garden of Tsimbazaza and the museum of history and civilisation in the afternoon. Hotel Bellevue or equivalent, bed and breakfast.

4th day: Ambositra

We cross the central highlands of Madagascar and go to Ambositra, the centre of the woodcutting art. On our way we will see a lots of beautiful photo opportunities. We stop in Antsirabe, situated on a latitude of 1500 metres. Antsirabe is a well known resort with is thermal bath in the middle of a hilly landscape with rice terraces . There’s enough time for a short tour and a visit to a precious stone cutter. Hotel Violett or equivalent, bed and breakfast.

5th day: Ambositra - National park Ranomafana

We start in Ambositra and reach Ranomafana with its national park in the afternoon. Ranomafana nation park, founded in 1991, is one of the most beautiful reserves in Madagascar. Here we find the luxuriant mountainous rainforest and a remarkable fauna and flora. Also the smallest frog on earth and the creeping-cat fossa are resident in this area. We start a night excursion to the nature reserve in the evening. Bungalow or camp, bed and breakfast.

6th day: Nationpark Ranomafana - Ambalavao - Ranohira

The morning is reserved for watching and searching through the Ranomafana national park. In 1987 the biologist Bernhard Meier found the very rare golden lemur in this region. We also find chameleons and lots of butterflies. Our journey goes on on a charming and varied route. We pass the imposing Andringitra-mountain which is characterized by imposing granite rocks. The Pic Boby stretches itself impressively up into the sky. It is the second highest mountain of Madagascar (2,658 metres). In Ambalavao we will see how the famous Antaimoro-paper is traditionally made by hand. The leaves of a special mulberry-tree are the basic raw material for the art which was a secret one for a long time. We reach Ranohira, starting point for our walk to the national park of Isalo. Hotel Le Joyau del Isalo or equivalent, bed and breakfast.

7th day: Isalo national park

Start of the two day excursion to the Isalo national park. Isalo is a mountainous region shaped by fantastic erosion and bizarre rock formations with caves, deep ravines, creeks and beautiful oases. Our camping equipment and our baggage are transported by porters. We carry only our personal items.
Our route leads us through unique sandstone formations to the Valley of the Monkeys. The habitats of lots of rare animal and plant species, and of course also that of the lemurs, are to be found here. We camp nearby a river. Bed and full board.

8th day: Isalo national park

A day of walking through rugged sandstone mountains lies ahead of us. We hike past at ravines cut deeply into bizarre rock formations. We camp once more at a river oases. A freshwater lake invites us for a bit of swimming. We can refresh ouselves with a cool bath. Bed and full board, camp.

9th day: Ifaty

We start our trip to Tulear after a cosy breakfast. We reach Ifaty on the west coast, where we stay in a hotel for two days. On our way we see a charming thorny woods, vegetation with impressive baobabs scattered throughout the surroundings. We stop at the famous Mahafaly-graves. They tell with their paintings and wooden carvings the stories of the lives of the deceased. Bungalow de Dunes, bed and half-board.

10th day: Ifaty

This day is reserved for relaxing at one of the wonderful beaches. Some trips are possible, for example a cosy walk to a thorny wood or sight seeing at a fishermen’s village, snorkelling in the coral-reef, boat tours on the Indian ocean (optional). Hotel de Dunes or equivalent, bed and half-board.

11th day: Tulear - Antananarivo

Transfer to the airport of Tulear after a cosy breakfast. Flight back to Antananarivo. Transfer to our hotel. The rest of the day at your own disposal. Hotel Bellevue or equivalent, bed and breakfast.

12th day: Marozevo - Andasibe

We drive from the highlands to the evergreen rainforest and down to the empire of the lemurs. Stop at Marozevo. We visit a reptile farm where we observe these strange animals in their spacious enclosures. We arrive at Andasibe in the afternoon and start our first walk into the central rainforest. In the reserve of Perinet we hope to see the indri, the greatest of the lemurs. This peculiar animal impresses with its long jumps of up to nine metres and because of its strange penetrating cry. On a night walk with torches we try to watch the night active animals. Bungalows of Feon ny Ala or equivalent, bed and breakfast.

13th day: Ankanin’ny Nofy

We start out again at the reserve of Perinet . In the morning, once again, we hike in the reserve with its animal wealth, which fills us with wonder. With a little luck we observe chameleons, reptiles, butterflies, birds and makis. In the afternoon we go to Manambato and by boat to “Ankanin’ny Nofy” at the Pangalanes-channel-canal. Overnight stay in a rustic bush house in the idyllic surroundings of Ampitabe-lake. Bed and half-board.

14th day: Ankanin’ny Nofy

After the breakfast we discover the remarkable surroundings of the nearby rainforest with its orchids, plants and crocodiles which live in the numerous freshwater lakes. In the afternoon we will go to an area which is called the Palmarium, by boat or on foot. A German has collected plants and animals from this area and assembled them in a special park.. Bushhouse, bed and half-board.

15th day: Tamatave

After a walk in the morning along the channel we start out on a trip by motorboat on the world’s longest channel-canal, known as de Pangalanes, to Tamatave. The vegetation is luxuriant and very varied.

16th day: Diego Suarez

We fly to the north of Madagascar to Diego Suarez. Diego Suarez is a very old colonial city located by a wonderful and fantastic bay. With its little sugar loaf symbol, the bay is the second greatest in the world. The Portuguese Diego Diaz landed on 10th of August 1500 as the first European in Madagascar. After arriving at the airport we have the chance to go sightseeing in the city. Hotel Kings’ Lodge or equivalent, bed and breakfast.

17th day: Indian Ocean

Day excursion to the Indian Ocean, on the east coast. The lonely beaches of Baie de Sakalave and Baie des Dunes invite us for a swim and for a walk in marvellous surroundings. Hotel Kings’ Lodge or equivalent, bed, picnic and breakfast.

18th day: Montage-d’Ambre-nation park

After breakfast we make a short trip to the Montagne-d’Ambre national park. It is well known for its varied fauna and flora. We walk to the hidden waterfalls in one of the few parks to have primary rain forest. There we try to find some of the different species of lemurs. Bed and full board, camp or equivalent

19th day: Tsingy of Ankarana

We move on to the Tsingy national reserve of Ankarana today. This park houses fantastic needle-like rocks which have formed from the chalky underground. Numerous canyons and caves riddle these rugged surroundings. We take our time for a walk and to observe animals in the spectacular scenery of the “Tsingiy of Ankarana”. Numerous animal and plant species live in the surrounding primary woods. The bird world is also represented very strongly. We discover kingfishers or an osprey with a little luck. Bed and full board, camp.

20th day: Tsingy or Ankarana

Today, we continue our exploration on foot of these impressive mountains and the canyon landscape in the morning. We will investigate one of the innumerable caves and venture forward into the canyons. Towards afternoon we begin the journey back to our hotel. The hotel is on one of the biggest bays of the world with a view out onto the little sugar loaf symbol of Madagascar. Bed, lunch, breakfast, Hotel Kings’ Lodge or equivalent.

21th day: Diego Suarez - Tana

The rest of the day is to be spent at your own disposal after a comfortable breakfast, perhaps a day to relax on the beach. Whoever would like can walk to the Montagne de Francaise directly behind the hotel, though this is optional. After a short-hop flight time in the late afternoon we transfer to the airport and make our return flight to Tana. Hotel Bellevue, bed and breakfast.

22th day: Tana

In the morning we go to one of the many kings’ hills which lie scattered around Tana . Every one of these hills has its own history. In the afternoon we stroll through the capital of Antananarivo with its many coloured markets and old colonial buildings once again. Bed and breakfast, Hotel Bellevue.

23th day: Tana - Flight back to Paris

In due of the short-hop flight schedules and internal flight times that can be subject to change, only the morning is free to use at our disposal. We will therefore use the last hours to go to the famous artisan market "Marche de Artisanat" for purchasing those last souvenirs. After the transfer to Ivato airport, check in and flight back to Paris. Dinner and breakfast on the aeroplane.

24the day: Arrival in Paris

Arrival in Paris, CDG airport, at 4:35 a.m. Then individual journeys back home to your respective places of residence.
